GIVEAWAY & Review: Charles Viancin Overboil Ring and Silicone Lid

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

I was pretty happy to have the opportunity to review the Charles Viacin Overboil Ring because it does fulfill a need I have, which is to stop overboiling. See, I have this problem that I tend to turn up the heat  to high on the stove top when I am boiling pasta or making soup, which causes the overboiling. Or I am just walking away and too busy sit there and watch the pot (A watched pot never boils, they say!) So, inevitably I end up boiling over the liquids and have a stove top full of sloppy wetness to clean up, not to mention the overboil that burned on to the glass cooktop. Sure, I could turn down the heat and stay in the kitchen. But now I don't have to because I have this overboil and it really does work. It basically acts like you are extending your pot and as a shield to catch any boils that pop up.

As a surprise to me, they also included the silicone lid pictured above and I will tell you more about at the bottom.

Product Description from Bink Davies

The unique design of the lid fits a variety of pots, making it easy to match your cooking needs. Other key features of the overboil lid include:

Raised edges prevent liquids from boiling over into your stovetop Central opening allows you to stir your food without worrying about spills Serving is simple without worrying about difficult clean-up afterward Anti-spill shield prevents food or liquid splattering outside of the pot

The OverBoil Ring retails from $11.99-17.99.

It is available in either blue or violet and in sizes M or L.

They sent me the Blue in a M size.

This is the Charles Viancin Cherry Blossom Silicone Lid in a 9" size. Now, I couldn't find that particular lid design on the Bink Davies website, but they do have others that function the same way in a Banana Leaf, Hibiscus, Sunflower, and Lilypad.

The lids fit over the top of a bowl and you gently press down to push the air out, creating a vacuum effect and making it airtight. This works great for those bowls you don't have a lid for but would like to cover the food in those bowl.

On the packaging they showed that you could hold it by he lid in the air and it wouldn't come unattached. Not that you are going to be doing that a lot or at all, but it's a fun experiment. So, I tried it with 2 empty bowls. The heavier bowl it did not work for, but with my lighter stainless steel bowl it did. Now, I don't think I would do it with food inside, but it does work.

Review: Natural Revolution Pet Urine Stain Finder

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

My Thoughts:

I was thrilled to now have the Natural Revolution Pet Urine Stain Finder to use and review. I wish I didn't have pet urine to find, but this is a WAY better way to find it than sniffing. As an owner of 2 old cats (by old I mean, 14 and 12 years old), we have had our fair share of cat urine spots over the years. One time it was because a cat needed medical attention because it had crystals in it's kidneys, other times it is because they are old and can't respond fast enough, and other times it is because one cat is a jerk and pees on stuff to let us know he is upset (we did give him kitty prozac for a while and it works, but he still is a jerk when we take a vacation - old cats are set in their ways).

THIS WORKS!!!

Of course, you are probably going to be disgusted when you do see what all lights up. It actually kind of makes me want to tear out the carpet in the room they have plagued with stains, but I will wait until we no longer have cats or are moving to do that. They are old and bound to do it still as they age. But I am happy I don't have to go sniffing things anymore to find where the smell is coming from. It works best if it is dark in the room, but you can still see stuff show up even during the day as long as there is not direct light on the area. Nothing smells worse than when you find the pet urine stain by sniffing. NO MORE SNIFFING NEEDED!!!

Product Description from Natural Revolution:

It works by reacting with certain chemicals in urine that fluoresce under ultra violet light. The stains will make your carpet light up like a christmas tree and you'll wish you had found this flashlight years ago.

Gluten-Free Banana Muffins Recipe, PLUS Good Cook Kitchen Tools

I took the opportunity to make some Gluten Free Banana Muffins while I was reviewing these 5 items for Good Cook. I was not able to use all 5 items for this one recipe, but I did use 3 of them. I did take pictures of the other 2 items for you to see what they were and how I used them. I will talk more about his 2 items below with their pictures.

I used the Good Cook egg separator to do just that, separate my egg whites from the yolk. This fits very nicely on the side of a kitchen aid mixer.

Next I used the Good Cook Double-Sided Flip Measuring Spoons to measure out the baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and vanilla.

Finally I used the Good Cook Smart Scoop Ice Cream Scoop to scoop out the mixture in to muffin cups. This ice cream scoop scoops out the perfect amount to fill them 2/3 full.

Gluten Free Banana Muffins

3 bananas, mashed
3 eggs whites
3/4 C raw sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp pure vanilla
1/4 C coconut oil
1 1/2 C all purpose Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Baking Flour

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Blend together bananas, egg whites, raw sugar.
  • Stir in baking powder, soda, cinnamon, vanilla and coconut oil.
  • Fold in Gluten Free Baking Flour
  • Scoop in to muffin cups (makes 15)
  • Bake for 18 minutes
  • Enjoy!

I was also sent the Good Cook 4 in 1 Safecut Can Opener and I have to tell you I just love this! This is going to make saving cans for crafts a breeze since it cuts the top completely off and there is no sharp edges.

Lastly, I had a chance to use the Utensil Pot Clip and what I love about this is that my spoon sits over the top of the pan and I am not dripping anything on my stove top or a spoon rest (that I would have to wash). It makes clean up a breeze!

Readers can participate in the first Good Cook 5-day product giveaway on Facebook starting June 2 – June 7 and win selected products they can add to their drawer. Also, there will be Instant winners! Every drawer entered has a chance to win an instant prize, and participants can submit a new drawer every day for a chance to win.

ALSO!!!! During this contest, everything on Good Cook.com is 25% off! How Awesome is That?!?!

Review: Number One Nutrition Probiotic Supplement

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

My Thoughts:

I need to share a disclaimer that I do not know a lot about probiotics and do not have a medical degree, so I am by no means a professional. I am a blogger and am going to share my thoughts on this products and tell you what I think and how I am using it. I have been reading a lot lately about he benefits of probiotics and how they are helpful in regulating your GI tracts and helping with a variety of ailments.

Recently we have been using Number One Nutrition Probiotic Supplements for Women, Men and Children. You can certainly read more about their description and benefits on the Amazon page. A couple of the ailments I have been most interested in learning how probiotics will help with is eczema, since my kids get it in the winter, and skin warts which my daughter has some on her legs (not a plantars wart.) Warts are a systemtic issue and I have read some information about how people have helped rid themselves of warts by taking probiotics. Now, we haven't been using them for very long so I will help to let you know later how effective they were. What I can tell you is that they are easy enough for myself and my 8 year old to swallow. They also claim it helps accelerate fat loss, which I would be pleased with too.

We do store them in the fridge, which is what is recommended to help keep the active cultures as long as possible. Probiotics have been getting a lot of positive attention as of late, so I am excited to see how it helps us. I did read that it was also helpful for those with acne, but I am not plagued with that so I can't speak to that, but this could be helpful to teens and their parents who are looking for a natural alternative.

Product Description from Number One Nutrition

Being healthy and happy about your body is a matter of choice.

What are probiotics? Probiotics are good bacteria who perform a very important role in our digestive, methabolic and immune systems. They produce enzymes that break down the food we eat, regulate vitamins intake and convert sugars to the essential nutrients our bodies need.

Our GI is home to 80% of our immune system! That´s why it is so important to take a good Probiotic Supplement!

This is how the Number One Probiotic may help you:
- Drastically improve your digestive health.
- Balance your intestinal flora.
- Improve your mood.
- Break down allergy causing proteins.
- Accelerate your fat loss.

Try It Tuesday: Toddler Sized Poncho

Some day my son will be mad at me for having this picture of him in a pink and purple poncho, but my daughter would have been too big for it and I made it to give as a gift. The poncho pictured is how I gave it with the added pocket in the front and the purple collar, but below you can see what the poncho looks like if you just want to cut it out and do a no sew poncho.

Supplies needed - fleece and scissors and a measuring tool are all the basic supplies you need to make a no-sew poncho.

First I measured out to make a 24" square out of my fabric. I will later cut the edges, but it is easier if you cut down your fabric to square to begin with.

Using a bowl that fit on my toddler's head, I placed it in the center of my fleece and cut around it.

Here you can see how it drapes around him when left as a square, which you can certainly do. But I laid it down and rounded off the edges.

With some leftover fleece, I made a pocket for the front. Toddlers love pockets!!!! Of course, this you will have to sew on, but I wanted you to see it so you could see the measurements and how I cut it. The piece is folded here.

Make It Monday: Pear Sauce Recipe

You can alter this based on how many pears you have, but what you see above was paid with a 10-pound lug of pears. You may choose to not add any sugar because pears are quite sweet naturally.

Homemade Pear Sauce

10 pounds of Bartlett Pears, peeled, cored, sliced
1 C water
2 T lemon juice
3/4 C sugar
2 tsp cinnamon

Directions:
Puree pears slices in a food processor.
Combine pears and water in a large pot and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes.
Add lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon and bring to a boil.
Simmer until thickened.
Process in your preferred canning method while mixture is hot or if freezing, allow to cool before putting in freezer safe containers.
Enjoy!

Fitness Friday: Medford 5K & Kids Obstacle Course Race

This was from the 4th Annual Medford Community 5K Run/Walk and Kids Obstacle Course Race. I have been participating in this 5K run since it's inception and my daughter has done the kids race from the beginning as well, but this was the first time my son participated. He was very excited to do a race but I had to remind him this race was about finishing not beating everyone since he was just a preschooler and kids up to age 10 could run (and did!)

I ran it with him. I love that he wanted to hold my hand while we ran the entire way. What a sweetheart. Before long he isn't going to want to hold his mommy's hand, so I will take it while I can.

He ran the entire 1/2 mile course with multiple obstacles throughout. I think there was 6 or 7 obstacles during the race, I can't remember exactly. He had fun. My daughter was slightly ahead of us throughout the race, so we could see her progress as well. This picture you can get a good idea of how many kids participated.

Here is my daughter coming towards the finish. It was a good little training run for her when we do the 3K zombie run next weekend.

She made it! There was never any doubt, but now we have pictures to prove it!

These last 2 pictures are of my son and I as we come to the finish. Every kid got to pick out a prize when they crossed the finish line. All of the prizes were outdoor toys that encouraged physical movement. Kudos to the team putting that together and encouraging ongoing physical fitness for the kids.

Like I said earlier, this was my 4th Medford Community 5K. I ran it with my friend Carrie (who I also ran the Irish Run with) and she completed her 2nd 5K now and I am happy to have ran with her for both. She was pretty pleased that we came in under her goal time and also shaved about 4 minutes off her time from her first 5K.

My next organized race coming up is the Mankato Zombie Run, which I am doing with my daughter. We will run the race and also be zombie afterwards for other runners.
